Essential Questions:
Small groups of teachers will complete a number of individual, pair, and group activities designed to help the explore a wide range of wikis and consider what role they might play in their students' learning.
Objectives:
  • To understand how wikis can be used for curricular projects
  • To understand the affordances/constraints of wikis
  • To learn basic wiki editing skills
  • To modify/create a project to use in the classroom in the next week or two
  • To observe a few pedagogy/management methods

Rationale:
Teacher often do not get time to explore technology tools which may be beneficial in their practice. As such, many valuable tools which could positively impact their practice are overlooked and not used.

  1. How long have you been using the internet?
  2. What are some ways you use the internet? How is that different from how people used it in 1999?
  3. Can someone explain what is meant by the read/write web?
Body of Lesson Plan:

The teacher will take the class to the computer lab.

While in the computer lab, the teacher will play the Video "Wikis In Plain Englis

During the demonstration the teacher will ask the class questions regarding the possible uses of Wikis. After the students demonstrate understanding by correctly answering the questions, the teacher will ask the students to pair up in order to go through the Wiki Workshop.

Going to the website and using hyperlinks will be emphasized. The teacher will ask a student to write the correct address to the site on the board so all students will be able to type the address in the address bar correctly. The following questions will be asked, possible students responses are italics.


  1. How would you describe a wiki?
    (Looks like a really easy to use webpage)

  2. What are some affordances/constraints of a wiki?
    (easy to use, allows discussion, allows comments)

  3. What are some ways Wikis might be used in a classroom?
    (Vocabulary space for students)

  4. What might these things mean for you and your students?
    (Flexible learning)

  1. Turn on the computer
  2. Log onto Baker13.Wikispaces.com
  3. Click on the + next to Pages in the navigation bar.
  4. Type your first name last initial in the title box
  5. Tag the page upd - for unit plan draft
  6. Click Create
  7. Insert a 6 column 2 row table onto the page.
  8. Fill in the table with your Unit Plan information
  9. Click save.
  10. On your own create a page for a lesson, using step 3 above
  11. Title the page with your initials and lesson title: (ex) RM_WikiWorkshop
  12. Add a 2 column 2 row table and start writing your lesson plan
  13. Save every 3 rows as not to loose information
  14. When complete click the save button
